Belle Haven, a comforting and luxurious community near it all
Just south of Old Town Alexandria and north of Mount Vernon sits one of Northern Virginia’s most prestigious and luxurious neighborhoods of the region: Belle Haven.
The neighborhood overlooks the Potomac River and is near Fort Willard. Belle Haven’s quality construction is sheltered from traffic and busy city hassles but still close to the capitol city region and what it offers.
Belle Haven provides residents with quiet, single-family luxury homes, manors, houses, cottages and townhouses nestled among parks. The neighborhood also finds itself near Belle Haven Country Club, located at the intersection of Fort Hunt Road, Route 1 and I95-I495 and within easy reach of Huntington Metro. For those looking to take advantage of the river location, Belle Haven Marina on GW parkway rents rowboats, canoes, kayaks and sail boats.

Martha Washington Library temporarily closes its doors …
We’ll miss her …
The Martha Washington Library is definitely one of the features and benefits of living in and around the 22307 area code. Martha Washington serves houses and townhouses of Bucknell Manor, the adorable garden-style condos of Belle View, the scenic condos at River Towers, the manors and homes of Belle Haven and homes and families of Fort Hunt with a broad selection of books and media. The staff is always helpful and pleasant. I and the Alexandria Gaming Group have made great use of the community room on numerous occasions. So December 20th will be a sad day for me.
That because Martha Washington Library, one of the oldest branches in the Fairfax County Library System, will close on December 20th at 5:00 p.m. for major renovations. By mid-February of 2009 and for the next 18 months, Martha Washington will temporarily be housed at 6328 Richmond Highway, Unit F, Alexandria, VA 22303. We’ll miss her while she’s gone.
The temporary location is nearby but not quite the same and is just that–a temporary location. I very much look forward to the larger newly renovated library at the same location as this beloved branch.
The Mount Vernon Rec Center neighbors Martha Washington Library.

The library is on Fort Hunt Road and is adjacent to Mount Vernon District Park. It is surrounded by woods which connect to the neighborhood by paths and foot-bridges.

I hit the jackpot!

Yes … that’s right.
I hit the jackpot. I won the lottery. Mine is the lucky number.
I won’t be giving up my blog or my real estate business because I won the jackpot. In fact, I’ll be working harder than ever. But today,
I pause to give thanks to God and family and friends and clients for this wonderful life of mine.
To tell the truth, I didn’t hit the lottery today. I won the lottery on the day I was born and I’ve been reaping the benefits ever since. The best part is … I didn’t even have to buy a ticket.
You see, I was born in the United States of America, which means that I already have life better than most of my fellow man. I’ve never known war, or famine or pestilence. I’ve enjoyed an ever increasing standard of living since the day I was born. If you were born in North America you probably won the lottery too.
But …
It gets better than that.
I was born in the Commonwealth of Virgina,
the Mother of States, the Mother of Presidents, the Capital of the Confederacy and the Pride of Dixie. The Commonwealth of Virginia, where Captain John Smith founded Jamestown. The state which George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and James Monroe and William Henry Harrison and John Tyler and Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson all called home. The state where Robert E. Lee fought and eventually surrendered.
The home of the Pentagon and the USPTO and the epicenter for the technology revolution. The Commonwealth of Virginia, most beautiful
state in the Union, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the sparkling beaches of the Eastern Shore.
The Old Dominion cradled me as she cradles the Chesapeake Bay, one of the largest and most important estuaries on the Atlantic.
It gets better than that.
I was born in Fairfax, one of the most prosperous counties in the nation. I make my home where where the Piedmont meets the Tidewater, on a ridge overlooking the Potomac River in a place called Belle Haven—one of the nicest neighborhoods in Fairfax County and Alexandria. My trusted, loyal and beautiful wife is busy making a Thanksgiving feast.
My sons are healthy and headed for home. Life could be better … but I really don’t know how.
So, today, I give thanks. Thanks to God, family, friends, clients and country for all that I have been given. I rededicate myself to the purpose of good and wish you and all of yours a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. I hope your Christmas is merry and expect you to have a prosperous and healthy New Year.

Martha Washington Library
The Martha Washington Library is part of the Fairfax County Library System. It was built in 1969 which makes it one of the oldest libraries in the Fairfax County system. The library is situated on Fort Hunt Road near the Belle View Shopping Center, which is at the intersection of Belle View Boulevard, Beacon Hill Road and Fort Hunt.
Because it was built in 1969, the library has the modernistic architecture of the late sixties, early seventies. The most distinctive feature of this design is the “hat” on the building. There is a 6 to 10 ft. feature on the roof which is reminiscent of the old Pizza Hut buildings.
The library has an on-going booksale. The prices on these books are quite reasonable.
Patrons can enjoy reading areas inside and out of the library. Inside, as one might expect, is quite and climate controlled. Outside there are a few benches. The library abuts the Mount Vernon Rec Center and nearly surrounded by the woods of the Mt. Vernon District Park.

The meeting room at the library seats 50 people and is quite pleasant. I have enjoyed the meeting room as a member of the Alexandria Gaming Group. The staff was very accommodating, and the room was excellent.
A volunteer group called the Friends of the Martha Washington Library supports the library. New volunteers are encouraged to fill out an application. It’s a great way to help your community and make new friends at the same time.

Between now and 2010, the Martha Washington Library will be undergoing an expansion project to add 8,000 square feet to the existing structure. The new structure will be 18,000 square feet and is depicted in the model in this picture.
