The Greek Revival building with four, large, and white pillars was built in 1839 from bricks from the St. Mary Chapel as the city's first intellectual and cultural center of Alexandria. It then served as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Civil War, then became a private home after the war, and later an office building. The Lyceum opened as the City's museum in 1985 and now gives visitors a glimpse of Colonial life in Alexandria through archaeological finds, old photographs, maps, original artworks, and a variety of historic artifacts.
The Lyceum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Virginia landmark in 1969. It is open from Monday to Saturday 10-5 pm, and on Sunday 1-5 pm. With a small suggested donation of $2, you will be able to take a tour of the museum and see how Alexandrian's in the 18th century lived, dressed, and built their homes.
